How We Started

Kattekop was born in the spring of 2023 when God entrusted us with four cats. It's a paradoxical beginning to a business all about cats because my husband and I never had a yearning in our hearts for cats; we were dog people.

 

Ironically, two weeks before finding Olive and her babies, I told my family I wanted a cat, which was a strange thing to come from my mouth. Olive, a stray at the time, gave birth on the side of our shop next to our neighbor's barking dog. We instantly brought them into our house to be safe, warm, and fed. We loved them so much we couldn't part with them. Today, Olive, Moose, Claymore, and Kimchi fill our house with love and a playful spirit. 

 

During my learning experience of becoming a new cat parent, I spent a lot of time researching things, including how to set up and tend to where they do their business. I spent a lot of time cleaning litter pans and thought there had to be a better way. I even tried a robot litter device, but I still had to dump the waste and clean the dome area. It didn't save me any extra time. Cleaning the waste from the box wasn't time-consuming; it was scrubbing the pan and refreshing the litter. Remember, this process was exacerbated because it's times four (4 cats = four litter boxes). 

 

I knew a liner was my best bet to save cleaning time, but the liners available on the market ripped easily or were expensive. I wanted something that worked against the cat's natural digging and covering but wasn't so expensive that I could change it often. Kattekop liners were born! 

 

I created prototypes and started testing. I spent months trying different folds, ways to secure it to the box, and with varying types of bottoms.
